Intellectual Disability Management

Comprehensive assessment, compassionate care, and family support for individuals with intellectual and developmental challenges.

Supporting Individuals and Families with Dignity

Intellectual disability (previously referred to as mental retardation) is a developmental condition characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, originating before age 18. It affects conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills, and varies greatly in severity from mild to profound.

At Jai Ram Psychiatry Clinic, we approach intellectual disability management with the utmost respect for the individual and their family. Dr. Lt. Col. Aanuj Yadav (Retd.) brings years of experience in neurodevelopmental assessment and management — including his Army service where he dealt with diverse developmental and cognitive presentations across different age groups and environments.

Our focus is not on limitations but on possibilities. We believe that every individual, regardless of their cognitive abilities, deserves the opportunity to reach their fullest potential. Our management approach emphasizes functional improvement, family education and support, coordination with therapists and educators, and enhancement of quality of life for both the individual and their caregivers.

Comprehensive Assessment Process

Accurate assessment is the foundation of effective management. Dr. Yadav conducts thorough evaluations that include:

Intellectual Assessment

Standardized intelligence testing (where appropriate) to determine cognitive functioning level.

Adaptive Behavior Assessment

Evaluation of conceptual, social, and practical skills needed for daily life.

Developmental History

Detailed review of developmental milestones, medical history, and family background.

Co-occurring Conditions

Screening for associated conditions like ADHD, autism, epilepsy, or behavioral disorders.

Medical Evaluation

Assessment for underlying medical or genetic causes that may be contributing.

Family Needs Assessment

Understanding family dynamics, support systems, and caregiver needs.

Our Management Approach

Individualized Care Plan

A personalized plan addressing the specific strengths, needs, and goals of each individual.

Functional Skills Development

Focus on developing practical daily living skills, communication, and social abilities.

Behavioral Support

Management of challenging behaviors through positive behavior support strategies.

Family Education & Counseling

Helping families understand the condition, set realistic expectations, and develop coping strategies. Caregiver burnout prevention is a priority.

Multi-Disciplinary Coordination

Liaison with special educators, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and vocational trainers for comprehensive care.

Understanding Severity Levels

Intellectual disability is classified by severity, which guides the management approach.

Mild

IQ 50-70

Can learn academic skills to approximately 6th-grade level. With support, can live independently and work.

Moderate

IQ 35-50

Can learn basic academic and vocational skills. Require moderate support for daily living.

Severe

IQ 20-35

Limited academic skills. Can learn basic self-care with extensive support. Require supervised living.

Profound

IQ below 20

Require constant supervision and care for all daily activities. May have physical limitations.

Supporting the Whole Family

A diagnosis of intellectual disability affects the entire family. We provide ongoing support not just for the individual but for parents, siblings, and caregivers. This includes emotional support, practical guidance, connecting families with community resources and support groups, and helping navigate educational and vocational systems.
